The Heart of the School

The Radical Love DTS’ are a family of schools that desire to help people know and receive the ‘Radical Love’ that our Father God has for us. As we receive this love into our hearts we are then faced with the question; ‘How do I express this Love with the World’?. The Radical Love DTS seeks to express this through three distinct themes or tracks. These are: Radical Love through Justice, Radical Love through Missions and Radical Love through Worship and Creative Arts.

The schools meet together for the majority of the school but separate into themes for about 10% of the time to focus on their particular theme.

The 3 themes are:

1)  Justice – for those whose hearts have been broken for the people around the world who are treated unjustly, whether that be in human trafficking, kids living in orphanages, homelessness or racial tensions.

2) Missions – for those who are wanting to take the gospel to the lost, to share the love of God with people and who have a heart to be God’s hands and feet around the world.

3) Worship and Creative Arts – This stream is for those who want to pursue God’s heart through singing, playing an instrument, drawing, sketching, photography, painting, or so many other ways that God has created us to be creative in. To use the gifts and talents God has given us to glorify His name throughout the nations.

Who is it for?

The school is for those who have a desire to know more of Abba’s love for them and a passion for any of the themes of i) Justice, ii)Missions and iii) Worship and Creative Arts. The school is geared towards young people aged 18-35 (or the young at heart), who are passionate about Jesus and about seeing this world in revival for the Fathers kingdom.

The Purpose of the School

The purpose of the school is to grow in intimacy with God, to know the authority we have as sons and daughters, to know the love of God in a more intimate way, and to take the love of God to the nations.

What can people expect in the lecture phase?

During the lecture phase, we will having speakers sharing on different topics such as:

– The Love of our Heavenly Father

– The Character and Nature of God

– Intimacy with Jesus

– The Lordship of Christ

– Relationships

– Holy Spirit

– Spiritual Warfare

Each week will consist of lectures, small groups, working in our community and time in prayer and worship. The heart of the school is to know God in a very real and intimate way and then to make Him known throughout the nations. There would also be time spent every week in your stream focusing on justice, missions or worship and creative arts.

Outreach Phase

What is the Purpose of this?

The purpose of outreach is to take the love of God to the nations. This looks like seeing people set free from the bondage of sin and living as his sons and daughters, loving people into the kingdom and seeing people released to be who God created them to be.  To break through language barriers using creative arts and worship and using this  to express God’s love to them.

Possible Locations

Possible outreach locations are Bangladesh, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. These are just some locations where our base has sent teams in the past but we are also open to God’s leading us to wherever He is wanting us to go.

Price range for Outreach budget: $5000-$7000

Length of Outreach

The length of outreach is 12 weeks. One week will be completed in New Zealand during lecture phase called church serve week and the other 11 weeks will be served during outreach.

Weekend and School Activities

There will be four inclusive weekend trips to different places around the South Island. These are a few of the possibilities: taking an overnight trip to the West Coast, going to Castle Hill and Cave Streaming, which you might recognize from movies like Narnia and Lord of the Rings. Sitting in the relaxing hot pools at Hanmer Springs, going on a hike/tramp, visiting Akaroa, a small French town or Diamond Harbour, one of the many bays in Banks Peninsula.

On the other weekends, there will be optional trips which would cost extra money to cover the cost of the use of vans and petrol. These trips could be to beaches like Taylor’s Mistake or Sumner, to different hiking locations around Oxford and Canterbury Plains, or into Christchurch to do some sightseeing in town. Budget around $100 for optional trips.

We do weekly outreach which consists of either going into Christchurch and serving with a ministry or local church, or doing street evangelism. Some weeks we might stay in Oxford and love our community around us as well. During lecture phase you will also go on church serve week with your outreach team to serve and to bond as a team.

School Leaders & Staff

Kia Ora,

I’m Val and I was born and raised in Chicago in the USA. I love coffee, laughing, baking, and adventures with people. I came to Oxford in 2012 to do a Justice DTS. At the time I was searching for where God was calling me and my heart was broken for the people enslaved all over the world. My eyes had been opened to the brokenness in the world and I had nothing holding me to the States so off to New Zealand I went and I fell in love with this nation and the people here, but more importantly I fell more in love with Jesus.

My life was ruined for the ordinary during my DTS and I knew I wasn’t going to be going back to a 9 to 5 job. I came back to staff in 2013 and have never really looked back. God continues to stretch me, mold me and take me on this amazing journey of trusting and walking with Him. I’m now a part of our leadership team here at Oxford and will be pioneering the new DTS called Radical Love.

I love walking alongside of people and challenging them in their walk with the Lord. I love seeing people step out in faith and boldness to share the gospel and love everyone. I love seeing people come to know their identity as sons and daughters and to know the authority that they can walk in because of who they are and to walk in freedom of being who God created to be. God is stirring my heart for worship and prayer and how to connect more with Him through those things to become more like Jesus and to gain more of a heart for the nations. I’m stoked to have you come and be a part of our family and can’t wait to get to know you!

Alec Kemper •

Hello! My name is Alec and I hail from the beautiful Boring, Oregon (yes, that is the town I am from). I am a lover of hot drinks, reading, working outdoors, and all things Jesus. Over the years I have come to absolutely love the Bible and talking about it, so if you ever want to talk about anything theological, come and talk to me! Alongside of school staffing, I do whatever needs to be done around base. That usually falls under the umbrella of maintenance and groundskeeping. I love taking care of the land God gave us here in Oxford, and I am excited that you get to experience His beautifully creation as well.
I did my DTS here in Oxford in 2016. During my DTS, God completely changed my life and led me into a deeper relationship with Him. Through some closed and opened doors, God gave me the opportunity to return to YWAM Oxford in August of 2017. Since I have returned to Oxford, God has continued to take me deeper in my relationship with Him. One of the main reasons I returned to staff at YWAM Oxford is to help raise a generation of followers of Jesus who love and serve The Lord fearlessly. I am excited to see all that God is going to do in your life, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!

Yolanda Borges •

Hola! Mi gente! My name is Yolanda and I’m a Puerto Rican from New Jersey, USA. I love cooking, music, travel, photography, outdoors and everything Jesus. I also love animals, sometimes more than humans but not more than you… I’m passionate about worship, discipleship, people, and missions. Currently I’m learning how to play guitar and staffing the Radical Love DTS.

I did my DTS here in YWAM Oxford in 2015 with the Backpacker’s school. I originally chose to do a DTS because I wanted to travel with purpose, not realizing that God was giving me that and so much more. The time that I set apart for the Lord to live in a community with other believers not only deepened my relationship with Him but increased my desire to to know more about Him. Going on a DTS was the best decision I could have ever made for myself. It lead me to spend a few more years here in New Zealand and embark on the most incredible journey of my life so far. It’s an extraordinary thing to step away from the 9 to 5 and all the things that society may consider normal and chose to go on this wild adventure of knowing Him and making Him known. I’m in a place where I feel I can do anything as long as stay close to Him.

My desire is for others to experience what I have experienced and more which is continual growth, abundance, freedom, and unconditional love that only Jesus can give. I’m looking forward to meeting you.
