The Heart of the School

The School of Sonship is a 3-4 week school that has come out of the journey we have been on at YWAM Oxford. The journey of learning who our Heavenly Father is and then from this revelation living as his beloved sons and daughters. The Father is revealing to the church his love and rest and we are finding contentment to be who we truly are. He is calling us home, out of our own works and into his rest. That we would we know we are dearly loved and valued with a wonderful inheritance that can’t be earnt. We want to share this revelation with others and invite you to join us on this journey into the Father’s Love and into our sonship.

Who is it for?

The School of Sonship is a multigenerational school for all age groups. In fact we like to think that ‘sonship’ is best seen when the generations come together. There are activities that will stimulate the adventurous and young at heart and also activities for those with a bent towards the creative arts. But the message cuts across all cultures and generational groups – you are ‘loved’ and you have a Father who is interested in you.

What does the School look like?

We have teaching from 10am to 1pm each day. The speakers come from YWAM Oxford staff and all over NZ, sometimes internationally. The speakers carry an anointing to impart sonship and the Fathers Love to peoples hearts. We also have family times from 9am to 10am each day and these could involve worship, discussion, soaking or anything he is showing us. These times are a great way to connect as a family group and bless one another.  There is also a creative element to the school and we usually have a speaker or speakers who carry this and this time also tends to have a practical component to it.

Up to this point we have had a life coaching session for each participant and people say this has been one of their highlights. We also have gone on an overnight adventure to Waipara Adventure Centre. Here we particpate in activities that encourage, freedom, fun and stepping out of our individual comfort zones. Activities are catered to all age groups and level of adventure. All these activities are about learning to live in increasing freedom and being ‘childlike’, as that is  what the journey of sonship is.

Most afternoons are free except for one to two afternoons per week. The afternoons consist in completing a short job on base and are for ‘hobby and processing time’.  The hobby time is about encouraging people to do something that they love and brings them life. So often in ministry and in life we lose the very things that bring us life and satisfaction, so we encourage people to find this again. Please bring any equipment and supplies that you will need for this time.

Usually we have 2 evening sessions a week and keep other nights free for rest and hanging out with people. Weekends are free and are yours to enjoy. We may organise some optional weekend activities to beautiful places in Canterbury and these come at an additional cost but are usually very affordable.

Upcoming Schools

We are trying a 3 week school in Jan/Feb for a number of reasons but believe the outcomes achieved in a 3 week school will be not be affected by having one less week.

$1300 for 3 week school in Jan/Feb

$1550 for 4 week school in Nov/Dec

Please enquire about camping and campervan rates for the summer schools. Please enquire about special rates for locals who will not be living on the base

For younger people accommodation is usually sharing with a few others and when needed we use bunk style accommodation.

School Leaders & Staff

James Smith • 42

Hi there my name is James Smith and I'm married to Carolyn and we have 5 wonderful boys - Titus 7, Zephyr 5, Leeland 4 and Samson 1 and Moses who was born in October 2017. Carolyn is captivated by the Arts and is always working on a creative project. I love the outdoors and sport; especially rugby league and cricket.

I started the School of Sonship because I wanted people to experience what I did. I was a driven Christian, hard on myself and others, believing that I had to prove myself. No amount of discipline or effort ever seemed enough. In 2011 I met the Father and his love at YWAM Oxford in the Fathers Love DTS. I began to see that I had become like the 'older brother' in the story of the Prodical son. I was 'slaving away' for my Father believing that he only wanted my service. I have since spent 6 years getting to know a Father who loves me and and who has a wonderful inheritance for me that can't be earn't. My heart is that others will meet this Father and begin to live as his sons and daughters.
